Kaal Bhairav Puja in Ujjain
An offering to the guardian of the city at Bhairavgarh, where the custom of offering madira is still kept.
2 pandits · About 2 to 3 hours · Kal Bhairav Mandir, Bhairavgarh

About this puja
Kal Bhairav is held in Ujjain to be the guardian of the city, and his temple at Bhairavgarh on the Shipra is among the oldest places of worship in it. The offering of madira at the sanctum is a custom found at very few other shrines in India, and it is still made here daily.
The puja is an offering: a sankalp in the devotee’s name, the invocation, the offerings made through the mantras, and aarti. It is not tied to a tithi and can be arranged on most days.
The queue is shortest in the middle of the day. If you are coming for the darshan day as well, this is usually the stop we put after noon.

Questions people ask
- Is the madira offering part of this puja?
- It is the custom of the temple and it is made at the sanctum. The pujari handles it; nothing is asked of you.
- What time should we come?
- The queue is usually shortest in the middle of the day. We will give you a time once the pujari has confirmed the booking.
- Can we combine it with the six-temple darshan?
- Yes, and most people do. Kal Bhairav already sits in the darshan day, so we arrange the puja for the same stop rather than sending you twice.
- How many of us can attend?
- The standard arrangement covers up to five taking the sankalp. More can stand with you; tell us the number and we will tell the pujari.
