About this puja

Kaal Sarp is a position in the birth chart that Hindu astrology describes as occurring when the seven grahas fall on one side of the axis of Rahu and Ketu. Families in whose chart an astrologer has read this position have traditionally arranged a shanti puja, and Ujjain is one of the places it has long been performed.

In Ujjain the rite is done at the water, on the bank of the Shipra at Ram Ghat, where the pandit begins by invoking Shiva and the other deities, then proceeds through the mantras and the offerings with a pair of naag and naagin placed on the mandal.

The puja is customarily arranged on a day chosen from the chart, so the first thing we do after your booking is agree the date with the pandit rather than fix it ourselves.

How the rite is performed

  1. Sankalp

The pandit takes the sankalp in your name and gotra, stating the reason the rite is being performed.

  2. Invocation

Shiva and the other deities are invoked with the opening mantras at the ghat.

  3. Naag and naagin sthapana

The naag-naagin pair is placed and worshipped on the mandal.

  4. Mantra and offerings

The mantras for Rahu and Ketu are recited, with flowers, fruit, milk, honey and black sesame offered through the recitation.

  5. Havan

The havan is performed with the havan samagri and ghee.

  6. Aarti and visarjan

The rite closes with aarti and visarjan at the river.
