Pitra Dosh Puja in Ujjain

Ancestral rites at the Shipra: tarpan, pind daan and the Pitru Gayatri, arranged with pandits who perform them through Pitru Paksha.

About this puja

These are the rites a family performs in remembrance of its ancestors. Tarpan is offered at the water, pind of rice flour and black sesame are made and offered, and the Pitru Gayatri is recited. Where an astrologer has read Pitra Dosh in a chart, the same rites are taken up with a sankalp naming the father and the family line.

Ujjain has long been a place for ancestral rites, performed at the water on the Shipra. The sankalp is taken before Shiva in the names of the person, their father and their family.

Where a full count of the Pitru Gayatri is to be recited, the recitation is traditionally divided among several pandits and can run over more than one day. Tell us what you intend and we will tell you what it takes.

How the rite is performed

  1. Sankalp before Shiva

The chief pandit takes the sankalp in the names of the person, their father and the family line.

  2. Tarpan at the water

Water, black sesame and barley are offered to the ancestors at the river.

  3. Pind daan

Pind of rice flour and black sesame are made and offered on the leaf.

  4. Pitru Gayatri

The Pitru Gayatri is recited. The count is settled with the pandit before the day and divided among the pandits performing it.

  5. Narayan Bali

Performed where the family has asked for it.

  6. Brahman bhojan and daan

The rites close with bhojan and daan, as the family wishes.

Questions people ask

Which day should we choose?
Most families choose Pitru Paksha, or the tithi on which the ancestor died. If you are unsure, send us the date of death and we will tell you the tithi and the nearest dates the pandits have.
Who in the family should perform it?
Customarily the son or the nearest male relative takes the sankalp, though practice varies by family and region. Tell us your situation on WhatsApp and the pandit will say what he can do.
Can the whole family attend?
Yes. The sankalp is taken by one person on behalf of the family, and everyone else is welcome at the ghat.
Is a full Pitru Gayatri jaap included?
No. The standard arrangement covers the rites above. A full count is a larger undertaking with more pandits over more days, and we will quote it separately once you tell us the count you want.
