About this puja

Mangal Dosh is a position Hindu astrology describes as Mars sitting in particular houses of a birth chart. Families whose astrologer has read it have traditionally arranged a shanti puja before a marriage is settled.

Mangalnath, on the high bank above the Shipra, is the temple tradition associates with the birth of Mangal, and it is where this rite is customarily performed in Ujjain. Tuesday is the day associated with Mangal, and the temple is at its busiest then.

Both charts are usually read before a marriage, so bring the birth details of both people if that is why the rite is being arranged.

How the rite is performed

  1. Ganesh pujan

The rite opens, as rites do, with Ganesha.

  2. Kalash sthapana

The kalash is placed and worshipped.

  3. Navagraha pujan

The nine grahas are honoured, with the recitation turning to Mangal.

  4. Mangal Graha Shanti

The Mangal shanti mantras are recited, with red cloth and red sandalwood offered.

  5. Havan

The havan is performed with ghee, sesame and herbs through the mantras.

  6. Aarti, bhojan and dakshina

    The rite closes with aarti.

Questions people ask

Does it have to be a Tuesday?
No. Tuesday is customary and many families prefer it, but the pandit will set the date from the chart and other days are often quieter and easier.
Do both people need to attend?
Not necessarily. The sankalp can be taken by one person for the marriage. The pandit will tell you what he advises once he has read both charts.
Is this the same as the Bhaat puja?
Families use the names differently. Tell us what your astrologer has asked for and we will confirm with the pandit what he will perform before you book.
How far is Mangalnath from the Mahakal temple?
A short drive across the city. If you are arranging a darshan day with us we will fit the puja into it rather than making you travel twice.
