Maheshwar sits on the north bank of the Narmada, below the fort Ahilyabai Holkar ruled from. The ghats are the reason to go: long flights of stone steps, temples at the top, and the river wide and slow below them.
The handloom sheds inside the fort are worth an hour on their own if anyone in the party cares about cloth.

- Can we take a boat on the Narmada?
- Yes, boats run from the ghats and are paid for there. The driver waits while you go.
- Is it worth combining with Omkareshwar?
- They are about an hour apart and some people do both in one very long day. We would rather quote you two days and have you enjoy them.
- When do we pay?
- At the end of the journey, to the driver. Nothing is taken on this site and there is no account to create.
- What if we cancel?
- Tell us the day before and there is nothing to pay. A car that has already set out for you is a different matter, and we would talk to you about it rather than apply a rule.
